Exterior painting

Planning to repaint the outside of your home? Start with the surface — siding, stucco, brick, trim, or a deck — then compare prep, weather-ready finishes, and honest cost ranges before you hire.

Start with the surface, not just the color

Exterior painting lasts longer when the paint matches the material underneath. Wood siding, fiber cement, vinyl, stucco, brick, metal, trim, doors, and decks all need different prep and often a different kind of primer, paint, or stain.

That is why the first question is not just “What color do I want?” but “What am I painting?” If you are painting siding, our siding guide is a good place to start. If you are still deciding on the look, browse color ideas.

HuePort is a free matching service for homeowners. We do not do painting work, sell paint, or act as a licensed contractor. We help you understand the project and get connected with licensed, insured painters near you.

What usually matters most outside

Exterior jobs are won or lost in the prep. Washing, scraping loose paint, sanding rough spots, caulking gaps, repairing damaged areas, priming bare surfaces, and protecting landscaping all affect how the finish looks and how long it holds up.

Weather matters too. Painters usually look for dry conditions, surface temperatures in the paint maker's range, and enough time for the coating to cure. Full sun, shade, humidity, wind, rain risk, and the season in your area can all change the plan.

If your home was built before 1978, old paint may contain lead. Ask how the painter follows lead-safe work practices. That is an important safety question for any exterior prep work that disturbs old paint.

Common exterior surfaces

Different surfaces need different systems. Siding often gets a full wash, spot repairs, primer where needed, and one or two finish coats. Stucco may need patching and a coating made for masonry. Brick can be painted, but it should be cleaned and evaluated carefully because trapped moisture can cause problems. Trim, shutters, and doors usually need extra sanding and detail work.

Decks and porches are their own category. Many need stain or a deck coating instead of standard house paint, and peeling happens fast when the prep is rushed. Areas with strong sun, salt air, snow, or heavy rain may also need more durable products and more frequent maintenance.

A good painter should explain what prep is included, which product line they plan to use, and how many coats are in the price.

Honest exterior cost ranges

Exterior painting costs in the US often land anywhere from about $2,500 to $10,000+ for a typical house repaint, with larger, taller, more detailed homes going well beyond that. Small trim-only or door projects can be much less, while stucco, damaged wood, major scraping, or hard-to-reach areas can push the price higher.

These are general ranges, not quotes. The real number depends on the surface, the amount of prep, the number of coats, the paint grade, access and height, trim detail, repairs, and your local labor market. You can compare more examples on our cost pages.

Be careful with prices that seem much lower than everyone else. Vague pricing, large cash deposits up front, door-to-door “today only” offers, no license or insurance, and pressure to sign right away are common warning signs. Get the scope, paint brand or grade, colors, and total price in writing before work starts.

How to choose a painter without losing control

You stay in control of the project. Compare a few quotes, verify that the painter is licensed and insured if your area requires it, and make sure the written scope says what is being washed, scraped, repaired, primed, painted, and protected.

Before work begins, confirm the final color, sheen, surfaces included, payment schedule, and who is responsible for cleanup. Before paying the final amount, walk the job and make sure the work matches what was agreed.

In plain English

For exterior painting, the surface and prep matter as much as the color, and it is smart to compare written quotes from licensed, insured painters before you hire.
